Adobe launches Generative Expand AI feature for Photoshop beta testers

The lighting and shadow on the UFO were appropriate to the scene, but it’s this next AI request that will really showcase the AI in action. As my first act of AI, I made the above selection and then hit the Generative Fill button. I didn’t feed it a prompt, so it just filled out the scene. With the image below as an example, I’d like to introduce a formatting convention I’m using in this article. The red dashed lines represent the selections I made with the Lasso tool. The actual crawling ants selection interface wasn’t visible enough for the screenshots for this article, so I’ve turned all selections into red dashed lines for your viewing clarity.

I have viewed the Glyn Dewis YouTube about the use of this, and what he uses it for makes sense. Maybe the publicity around Ps and GF is useful in reminding people just how easy it is to manipulate a photo and how important it is to get multiple angles on a story before drawing any conclusions. It takes a good deal of bad faith to argue that adjusting exposure is not different from adding a new sky or erasing people. “One could equally claim that retouching portraits isn’t photography by that argument. Or even adjusting exposure. Or removing a small distraction. Or on and on.”

For some reason, the AI decided to put a cluster of buildings kind of mashed on top of each other, sticking out from behind the bus.

Which Photoshop has generative fill?

The selection appears with the marching ants (4) around it, then reveals the generative fill tools in the taskbar (5). At present, the Generative Fill feature is not available for commercial use, not accessible to individuals under 18, not available in China, and operates exclusively with text prompts in English. From the examples here and further testing, Generative Fill and Outpainting appear to be close in how they extend different types of images. They each have their limitations, but the quality of generations appears too close to call. Neither one stands out as an obvious winner in every comparison we made based on just a couple of attempts to extend images. For our second comparison, we’ll take a square 1,024-pixel image and extend it out to roughly twice its size as a horizontal version that’s more apt for a landscape photo.
